Private: Volunteering with Steveston Community Centre

I will listen actively to participants, other volunteers, staff, coordinators, parents, and everyone I interact with.

  • All voices are valued and welcomed. Remember to hear people out before
    making any judgements.
  • If a volunteer or community member is saying something that you disagree with,
gently redirect them towards a relevant topic. Never escalate a disagreement
    unless it impacts your work.

I will validate everyone’s feelings and emotions before moving forward with open-ended solutions.

  • There will be times when you need to make a quick decision without direct
supervision. In these situations, remember to stay calm and come to a
consensus with others regarding the best course of action. Never act unilaterally
without the knowledge of other volunteers.
  • When making decisions, remember that the task you are assigned is still a
priority. When in doubt, prioritize the task you are doing.

I understand that we are all here to learn together. I will keep an open mind to learning from and with others.

  • It is totally normal and alright to make mistakes! It’s more important to be accountable, learn from them, and keep a growth mindset.

I will work with everyone to share feedback in a positive manner for development. If necessary, I will inform a staff member if I have any concerns.

  • If another volunteer’s behaviour is inappropriate, calmly speak to them about what specifically is bothering you. Let your supervisor know if the behaviour continues.
